Symmetry in Nature

Read and notice.

A shape has a line of reflection symmetry when folding along that line makes its two halves match. A rectangle that is not a square has two such lines. A leaf may look nearly symmetrical without matching exactly.

Try it.

  1. Fold a sheet of paper and draw a simple shape on one side of the fold.
  2. Copy its mirror image on the other side. Compare corresponding points.
  3. Draw a leaf. Decide whether its two halves match exactly or approximately.

Your response

Where is your line of symmetry? Explain how you checked it and describe any differences you noticed.
