Read for Evidence

Read and notice.

Maya’s class was making a paper garden. A new classmate, Sam, stood beside the table without choosing a task. Maya felt nervous about speaking first, but she asked, “Would you like to draw a leaf with me?” Sam nodded and suggested a blue flower. When their first paper stem fell over, they folded a wider base and tried again. By the end of the afternoon, both children had added something to the garden.

Evidence is a detail that supports an idea. The story tells us Maya felt nervous. It does not tell us everything Sam was thinking. Separate what the text says from what you infer.

Try it.

  1. Find a detail that supports the idea that the children cooperate.
  2. Find a detail showing how they respond to a problem.
  3. Write one question the story does not answer.

Your response

Explain how the children work together, cite a story detail, and name one thing you cannot know from the text.
